Boracay is about 1,000 hectares of land with roughly 12,000 hotel rooms. Most of those rooms are mid-scale — 60 to 120 keys, one or two pools, one or two restaurants. Electricity on the island comes through a mix of grid supply and the local Aklan Electric Cooperative, and tariffs have climbed about 28% since 2021.
That climb is the part Henrik Cruz keeps in his head. He's the chief engineer at Fairways & Spa, and he runs the property's monthly utility review himself. Cooling, water heating, and pool heating together take about 70% of the bill. Cooling is unavoidable. Pool heating, he says, "is the one load you can actually do something about."
The seasonal pattern matters too. Cool months and rainy season run roughly November through February. Without heating, pool temperature drops to 23–24 °C in that window. Henrik pulled the occupancy data for 2022 and 2023 and showed me: rooms with pool view underperformed rooms without by 12–18% in those months, all other things equal. "Guests notice. They don't write it on the comment card, but they notice."
So when the old fixed-speed unit tripped its overload twice during the December 2023 peak, the choice was straightforward: refurbish the existing equipment, or look at what a modern inverter unit could actually do on this site.
He went with the second option.

He handed the brief to two suppliers: the local distributor of AquaCal, and a competing European brand that had been chasing him for two years. R32 refrigerant. Lower Global Warming Potential (GWP 675) than R410A (GWP 2,088), higher volumetric capacity, lower charge required. For a tropical install where you sometimes leak refrigerant during typhoon-season service, R32 is the responsible choice. Philippine electrical code accepts R32 for outdoor commercial installations without extra ventilation. Indoor mounting would have required a re-think.
Full DC inverter compressor. Unlike a fixed-speed unit that cycles on and off in binary fashion, the inverter compressor modulates continuously — as low as 20% of nominal capacity when the pool is at temperature. Henrik's exact words when I asked how it sounded different: "It just doesn't make the bang-on, bang-off sound the old one did. It hums. That's it."
Vertical-discharge airflow. Air drawn in from the front, exhausted upward. This is what freed up the floor space — no side clearance needed, only a wall to mount against and 600 mm of headroom above for exhaust.
The math gets even better in tropical conditions. Pool water sits at 26–32 °C. Ambient air rarely drops below 25 °C, even at night. Thermal lift is small. Two things to flag honestly:
Henrik says he budgeted the electricity savings going in. The footprint reduction he didn't.
The 40% reduction came from two design choices that compound each other:
The total freed-up area: about 5 m². Henrik used it for kayak racks and a small maintenance desk. Jomar, the maintenance tech who has been on the property for nine years, says the real win is something else: he can now stand in the alcove and turn around without brushing the unit. "That's the win. Not the electricity. The electricity is the bonus."
Noise dropped too. The old compressor's 52 dB hum was noticeable from the pool deck at night — Henrik has a 2022 guest comment card with the exact phrase "fan noise at the pool side." The new unit at 38 dB is quieter than the staff kitchen refrigerator. That comment card hasn't reappeared in 18 months.
